What is win rate?
Win rate is the percentage of qualified sales opportunities that result in a closed-won deal — typically 15–30% in B2B SaaS.
What is Win Rate?
Sales win rate is the percentage of closed opportunities that become customers. The core formula is closed-won deals divided by closed-won plus closed-lost deals, but the definition needs discipline: teams should decide whether no-decisions are included and then report that consistently. A competitive win rate excludes no-decisions and shows how often you beat another option. A true opportunity win rate includes no-decisions and shows whether the buyer chose anyone at all. Looking at both is more useful than a single blended number. A declining competitive rate suggests positioning, qualification or execution problems; a high no-decision rate usually points to weak urgency, unclear business impact or a decision process that was never confirmed. Segment the metric by source, deal size, sales stage and competitor before coaching the team on it.
When to use Win Rate
- Monthly and quarterly sales performance reviews
- Comparing inbound, outbound and partner-sourced opportunity quality
- Diagnosing whether losses are competitive or no-decision
- Measuring whether discovery and qualification improvements are working
Real examples
- True win rate: 18 wins ÷ (18 wins + 42 losses + 12 no-decisions) = 25%.
- Competitive win rate: 18 wins ÷ (18 wins + 42 losses) = 30%. The gap shows that no-decision is part of the problem.
- Diagnostic question: 'Did we lose to a competitor, to doing nothing, or because this account never fit our ICP?' Each answer needs a different response.
- Segmented view: a 35% inbound win rate and a 12% outbound win rate should not be averaged into one coaching target; the motions require different fixes.
Common mistakes
- Excluding no-decisions without labelling the resulting metric as competitive win rate.
- Comparing win rate across inbound and outbound, deal sizes or regions without segmenting the data.
- Trying to increase win rate by accepting fewer opportunities without watching pipeline creation and revenue.
- Logging every loss as price when the real cause was weak discovery, no champion or no compelling event.
