What is buyer persona?
A buyer persona is a research-based profile of the specific person who buys your product — their role, KPIs, pain points, and the language they use.
| Letter | Meaning | What it actually means |
|---|---|---|
| • | Role & seniority | Title, reports to, team size, budget authority. |
| • | Goals & KPIs | What success looks like for them this quarter. |
| • | Pain points | The problems keeping them up at night. |
| • | Objections | What they push back on and why. |
| • | Where they learn | Where they spend time consuming content. |
What is Buyer Persona?
A buyer persona is a profile of an individual you sell to: their role, what they are measured on, what they fear, what they have already tried, where they look for answers, and how they talk about the problem. It complements the ideal customer profile, which describes the company rather than the person. The failure mode is well known — a slide with a stock photo, a fictional name and a list of hobbies that nobody has opened since. A persona is only useful when it changes what a rep says. That means it should be built from actual call recordings and customer interviews, and it should contain the sentences these people use, the objections they raise first, and the metric on their own performance review. If a persona does not change your opening line and your first three questions, it is decoration.
When to use Buyer Persona
- Writing cold call openers and email sequences per role
- Deciding which stakeholder to enter an account through
- Onboarding new reps who have never spoken to that job title before
Real examples
- Role: VP of Sales, measured on team quota attainment and rep retention.
- Fear: hiring five SDRs and having three leave before they produce.
- Already tried: a sales training vendor, a LinkedIn course, shadowing.
- Their words: 'ramp time', 'call reluctance', 'my reps won't pick up the phone'.
Common mistakes
- Inventing personas in a workshop instead of building them from recorded calls.
- Including demographic detail that never changes what a rep says.
- Making one persona per job title and then messaging every industry identically.
- Confusing the persona with the ICP, which leaves the target account list undefined.
