    What is MRR?

MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue) is the predictable subscription revenue a business earns in a month. It is ARR divided by twelve, but used differently: ARR is a board-level number, MRR is an operating one, because it surfaces changes fast enough to act on. The useful practice is decomposing movement each month into new MRR from new customers, expansion from upgrades and seat growth, contraction from downgrades, and churned MRR from cancellations. Net new MRR — the sum of all four — is the number that tells you whether the business grew. A month showing strong new MRR alongside rising churn looks healthy in a headline and is not, and only the decomposition makes that visible before it becomes an annual trend.

    When to use MRR

    • Monthly operating reviews and cash planning
    • Early-stage companies where annual numbers move too slowly to steer by
    • Tracking the effect of a pricing or packaging change

    Real examples

    • Movement: $40K new + $12K expansion − $5K contraction − $18K churn = $29K net new MRR.
    • $420K MRR × 12 = $5.04M ARR.
    • Monthly churn of 3% compounds to roughly 31% annually.

    Common mistakes

    • Mixing one-off fees into MRR, which makes trend analysis meaningless.
    • Tracking only net MRR and never seeing that expansion is masking churn.
    • Counting annual prepayments as one month's MRR instead of spreading them.
