GPCTBA/C&I — Goals, Plans, Challenges, Timeline, Budget, Authority, Negative Consequences, Positive Implications
GPCTBA/C&I is HubSpot's inbound sales qualification framework that combines BANT with deeper buyer-centric questions about goals, plans, and consequences.
| Letter | Meaning | What it actually means |
|---|---|---|
| G | Goals | The buyer's measurable objectives. |
| P | Plans | What they're already doing to hit those goals. |
| C | Challenges | What's blocking the plans. |
| T | Timeline | When the goals must be hit. |
| B | Budget | What they can spend. |
| A | Authority | Who decides. |
| N.C. | Negative Consequences | What happens if they don't hit the goal. |
| P.I. | Positive Implications | What happens if they do. |
What is GPCTBA/C&I?
GPCTBA/C&I (Goals, Plans, Challenges, Timeline, Budget, Authority, Negative Consequences and Positive Implications) is HubSpot's expansion of BANT for inbound sales. It is long, and deliberately so: the sequence forces a rep to understand what the buyer is trying to achieve and how they intend to achieve it before touching money or authority. The genuinely useful additions are at the end. Negative consequences asks what happens to the business — and to the person — if the goal is missed, which is where urgency actually lives. Positive implications asks what it means if they hit it, which is what turns a contact into a champion with personal upside. Nobody runs all eight elements in one call, and trying to produces an interrogation. Treat it as a checklist to complete across a cycle rather than a script.
When to use GPCTBA/C&I
- Inbound-led sales where the buyer has already self-educated
- Consultative, longer cycles with a single primary stakeholder
- Coaching reps who close on features and never establish goals
Real examples
- Goals: 'What's the number your team has to hit this year?'
- Plans: 'What's the plan to get there as it stands today?'
- Negative consequences: 'What happens if the team ends the year at 70%?'
- Positive implications: 'And if you hit 110% — what does that change for you?'
Common mistakes
- Running all eight elements in a single call, which turns discovery into an interview.
- Asking about plans before goals, so there is nothing to evaluate the plan against.
- Skipping negative consequences and positive implications, which are the two parts BANT lacks.
- Using it for outbound cold calls, where you have not earned this many questions.
