    What is cold call?

    TL;DR

A cold call is an outbound phone call to a prospect who has not previously engaged, used by SDRs to book meetings for AEs.

    What is Cold Call?

A cold call is a phone call to someone who has not asked to hear from you. It remains one of the fastest ways to create pipeline, and one of the least popular, because the failure is immediate and personal. The structure that works is unglamorous: earn permission in the first eight seconds by being direct about why you are calling, state a problem the person plausibly has in one sentence, ask a question, then either book a short meeting or leave cleanly. Most cold calls do not fail on the pitch — they fail in the ten seconds after the first objection, when the rep either argues or apologises. Typical numbers: 50-100 dials produce 5-10 conversations, and 5-10 conversations produce one or two meetings. That ratio only improves through repetition on the opener and on the five objections you hear most.

    When to use Cold Call

    • Outbound prospecting into named target accounts
    • Following up on a trigger event — a funding round, a new hire, a product launch
    • Reviving inbound leads that never replied to email

    Real examples

    • Permission opener: 'This is a cold call — do you want to give me thirty seconds to say why I rang?'
    • Problem statement: 'Most heads of sales I speak to say new reps take six months to ramp. Is that roughly your experience?'
    • Clean exit: 'Sounds like wrong time rather than wrong thing. Worth a call in Q3?'

    Common mistakes

    • Asking 'how are you today?' — it signals a sales call before you have said anything useful.
    • Pitching features in the opener instead of naming a problem.
    • Arguing with the first objection rather than acknowledging it and asking one question.
    • Calling without a reason specific to that company, which the prospect hears immediately.
