    What is objection handling?

    TL;DR

Objection handling is the structured process of acknowledging, clarifying, and resolving the concerns a buyer raises during a sales conversation.

    What is Objection Handling?

Objection handling is the process of helping a buyer examine a concern rather than trying to win an argument. The most useful sequence is LAARC: Listen without interrupting, Acknowledge that the concern is reasonable, Ask a question to find its real cause, Respond with relevant evidence or a reframing question, then Confirm whether the concern is resolved. The distinction matters because a stated objection is often a proxy. 'Too expensive' can mean there is no value case, no budget owner, a cheaper competitor, or simply that the buyer does not trust the expected outcome. A fast rebuttal answers the wrong problem. Strong reps slow down just enough to identify what the buyer means, use the buyer's own situation to respond, and then check whether it is safe to move forward. If it is not, they keep diagnosing instead of repeating the same claim more loudly.

    When to use Objection Handling

    • Live cold calls, discovery calls, demos and negotiation conversations
    • When a buyer gives a vague response such as price, timing or needing approval
    • Coaching call recordings to identify the moment a rep became defensive or rushed
    • Preparing roleplays around the objections a team hears repeatedly

    Real examples

    • Price: 'That is fair. When you say expensive, are you comparing it with another option, a budget you already have, or the value you expect this to create?'
    • Timing: 'It sounds like the problem is real but not urgent. What would have to happen for it to become a priority this quarter rather than later?'
    • Authority: 'I understand. How has a purchase like this been approved before, and what will your boss need to see to be comfortable with it?'
    • Status quo: 'You may be right that the current process is good enough. Where does it break down today, if at all, and what does that cost when it does?'

    Common mistakes

    • Interrupting the objection, which tells the buyer you are waiting for your turn rather than listening.
    • Treating every price objection as a discount request instead of diagnosing value, budget and risk.
    • Using memorised rebuttals that do not connect to the buyer's stated situation.
    • Failing to confirm whether the response helped, then proceeding as though the concern disappeared.
