FAB — Features, Advantages, Benefits
FAB is a sales pitch framework — Features, Advantages, Benefits — that translates what a product does into why a buyer should care.
| Letter | Meaning | What it actually means |
|---|---|---|
| F | Feature | What the product is or has. |
| A | Advantage | What that feature does that's better than alternatives. |
| B | Benefit | What the buyer gets — outcome, time saved, money made. |
What is FAB?
FAB (Features, Advantages, Benefits) is a message-construction model that stops reps listing capabilities. A feature is what the product has. An advantage is what that lets it do. A benefit is what changes for this specific buyer. The failure is almost always stopping at the advantage, which sounds like a benefit but is generic — 'which means you get better visibility' applies to every product in every category and persuades nobody. A real benefit uses the buyer's own situation and ideally their own number. FAB is most valuable as an editing tool: write your pitch, find every claim, and check which of the three it is. On a live call the sequence also inverts usefully — lead with the benefit, and only supply the feature if the buyer asks how it works.
When to use FAB
- Writing pitch, demo and email copy
- Coaching reps who narrate features during demos
- Preparing a champion to explain your product internally
Real examples
- Feature: 'Calls are scored automatically against a coaching rubric.'
- Advantage: 'Which means managers don't have to listen to every call.'
- Benefit: 'So your two team leads get roughly six hours a week back, and new reps still get weekly feedback.'
- Inverted for a live call: lead with the six hours, mention the scoring only if asked how.
Common mistakes
- Stopping at the advantage and believing you stated a benefit.
- Claiming a benefit that requires a buyer situation you never verified in discovery.
- Listing features in sequence during a demo, which trains the buyer to compare spec sheets.
- Using the same benefit for every persona when each is measured on something different.
